LimeWire User Guide Installation Getting Started In order to install the LimeWire program you must first download the installer from the website. After downloading the program, follow the installation method associated with your computer's operating system: (CD-ROM users, please follow instructions located on the inner panel of the CD sleeve.) Windows "Run" the installer from the website or double-click LimeWireWin.exe Mac OSX Double-click the .dmg file to expand it. If you downloaded the installer with the Safari browser, the DMG should have expanded automatically. Double-click on the LimeWire icon to start using the software. Mac OS Classic (8.1 or greater) Double click LimeWireMac.bin Linux Open a shell and cd (change directory) to the directory where you downloaded the installer. At the prompt type: sh ./LimeWireLinux.bin Solaris Open a shell and cd (change directory) to the directory where you downloaded the installer. At the prompt type: sh ./LimeWireSolaris.bin Unix Open a shell and cd (change directory) to the directory where you downloaded the installer. At the prompt type: sh ./LimeWireSolaris.bin All Other Platforms Type: jre -cp LimeWireOther.zip install. *If the above does not work try: jre -classpath [path to] classes.zip: LimeWireOther.zip install. If that does not work either, on sh-like shells, try: cd [to directory where install.zip is located] CLASSPATH = [path to] classes.zip: LimeWireOther.zip export CLASSPATH java install. For csh-like shells try: cd [to directory where LimeWireOther.zip is located] setenv CLASSPATH [path to] classes.zip: LimeWireOther.zip java install Once you have installed the LimeWire program, your next step will be bringing up the application. Do this by clicking on the LimeWire entry in the program menu of your start menu. *requires local JRE or JVM install with command: java -classpath LimeWireOther.zip install. The Installation Wizard NOTE: Screenshots are taken from a Windows installation, English version. The installation process depends on whether or not you already have the Java Runtime Environment installed on your machine. For specific problems with installation, check the FAQ document. The install window will open. Click "Next" to initiate installation. You will be asked to choose a folder to install LimeWire. You may choose the default folder or install in a different folder. Afterwards, you will be asked to select where to place the shortcut/alias for LimeWire. We recommend placing the LimeWire shortcut on your desktop. LimeWire will install on your computer. Select "Finish" or click on the shortcut on your desktop to launch LimeWire. The Setup Wizard Select your preferred language for LimeWire. Follow and complete The Setup Wizard. You will be asked to designate a folder that will contain the files you would like to share. With the "Browse Host" feature, a user can look at any file in this folder. You can change your folder location at any time by going to Tools/Options/Saving. Please be aware that private material can be viewed if it is in your shared folder. Choose your connection speed. If you do not know your speed, select "Modem" if your connection is generally slow, or "Cable/DSL" if it is generally fast. You can change your connection speed at any time by going to Tools/Options/Speed. Choose whether or not you would like LimeWire to start automatically when your computer starts. It is recommended that you do this for the best LimeWire experience. LimeWire will load into your system tray. If you have any firewalls or security programs installed on your computer, you may receive a prompt asking if you would like to grant permission to LimeWire. IMPORTANT: You must grant permission or unblock access in order for LimeWire to function. You will have the option to allow LimeWire to scan your hard drive for directories you might like to share. If you choose to do this, the media files currently on your computer will be available automatically in your Library. Your settings are complete. When you complete this setup, LimeWire will be ready to go.
